Donata Ziebarth

Antigone is the latest work in my “Southern Madames” series. She is the sister of Olivia and Flavia. Even back in college, I was particularly fascinated by ancient paintings and everything they’ve been through: their beautiful patina, formed over the centuries. Inspired by this, the background has been built up and worn away in countless layers of paint to create a look as if from another era. Over this, Antigone is rendered as if in gold leaf, shimmering in the light.
