Persephone is the latest piece in my “Southern Madames” series. She is Antigone’s cousin. Persephone symbolizes change, rebirth, and the eternal cycle of nature…between light and darkness, she embodies the letting go of autumn and, at the same time, the promise of a new spring.

Even back in college, I was particularly fascinated by ancient paintings and everything they’ve been through: their beautiful patina, formed over the centuries. Inspired by this, the background has been built up with countless layers of paint and then chipped away to create a look as if from another era. Superimposed over it, as if crafted from gold leaf in the light: Persephone.
